Through offering our support, we enable our people and our communities to grow, to become missionary and to thrive. We are working towards all of our churches becoming outward-looking churches.

How to Examine Your Conscience

Examining your conscience is an important step in preparing for the Sacrament of Confession. It involves reflecting on your thoughts, words, and actions in light of God’s commandments and the teachings of the Church. By doing so, you become more aware of where you have fallen short and where you need God’s forgiveness and grace.

To begin, find a quiet space for prayer and reflection. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and the courage to see your life clearly. One helpful approach is to use the Ten Commandments as a guide. Consider how well you have followed each commandment, both in your actions and in your attitudes. Reflect on how you have lived out the teachings of Jesus, especially in terms of love for God and neighbour.

Some common areas to reflect on include your relationship with God. Have you made time for prayer and attending Mass? Have you used God’s name with respect? Also consider your relationships with others. Have you shown kindness and respect, or have you harboured resentment or anger? Reflect on your responsibilities. Have you been truthful, honest, and just in your dealings with others?

It’s also important to think about any sins of omission—things you should have done but didn’t. Perhaps you missed opportunities to help someone in need or failed to act when you should have.

Once you have examined your conscience, bring these reflections to confession with an open heart. Remember that God’s mercy is always available, and this process is about spiritual growth and healing.
