Through offering our support, we enable our people and our communities to grow, to become missionary and to thrive. We are working towards all of our churches becoming outward-looking churches.
Confirmation is a significant sacrament in the Catholic Church, marking the completion of the baptismal promises and the strengthening of one’s faith. It is a moment when your child publicly affirms their commitment to the Church and receives the Holy Spirit in a special way. This sacrament is an essential step in their spiritual journey, empowering them to live out their faith actively and maturely.
Typically, children receive the sacrament of Confirmation around the age of 11 to 15, though the specific age can vary by parish. Preparation for Confirmation often includes a series of classes or a programme designed to educate your child about the Holy Spirit, the importance of the sacraments, and the teachings of the Church. This preparation helps them understand the responsibilities that come with being confirmed and encourages a personal relationship with God.
As part of the Confirmation process, each child chooses a sponsor—usually a confirmed Catholic who will support and guide them in their faith journey. This relationship is important, as the sponsor serves as a role model and mentor during this significant time.
The Confirmation ceremony usually takes place during a special Mass, where the bishop or a priest lays hands on each candidate, invoking the Holy Spirit. Your child will then receive an anointing with sacred chrism, symbolising their strength and calling to be a witness of Christ in the world.
After Confirmation, your child is encouraged to continue participating in the life of the Church and to take an active role in their faith community. This sacrament is not just a rite of passage; it is an invitation to deepen their relationship with God and to live out their calling as a fully initiated member of the Church.
