A Missionary Diocese

Through offering our support, we enable our people and our communities to grow, to become missionary and to thrive. We are working towards all of our churches becoming outward-looking churches.

Being Confirmed as an Adult

Being confirmed as an adult is a profound and meaningful step in one’s spiritual journey within the Catholic Church. While many people receive the sacrament of Confirmation in their youth, adults also have the opportunity to be confirmed, often after completing a period of preparation and catechesis. This sacrament serves to strengthen your faith and deepen your commitment to living out the teachings of Christ.

For adults, the path to Confirmation typically begins with participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). This programme provides an in-depth exploration of the Catholic faith, covering topics such as the sacraments, the teachings of Jesus, and the mission of the Church. This process not only prepares you for Confirmation but also equips you with the knowledge and understanding necessary for a fulfilling spiritual life.

Throughout the RCIA process, you will engage in discussions, prayer, and reflection, often alongside a community of fellow seekers. You will also have a sponsor—someone who supports your journey and helps guide you in your faith. This relationship can be incredibly enriching, as your sponsor shares their own experiences and insights into living a Catholic life.

The Confirmation ceremony for adults usually takes place during a special Mass, often led by a bishop. During the rite, you will be called forward, and the bishop will lay hands on you, invoking the Holy Spirit. You will then receive an anointing with sacred chrism, signifying your full initiation into the Church and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Being confirmed as an adult is not just an endpoint; it is a new beginning. It invites you to take an active role in the Church and encourages you to share your faith with others. Following Confirmation, you are encouraged to participate in parish life, engage in service, and continue growing in your relationship with God.
